Once again a barn-burner of a game as Kelly loses 3 out of 4 to Michigan. Michigan coach, Brady Hoke, apparently coaches the whole game without knowing what plays are being called ala Joe Paterno.

It looked at times that ND would be blown out but these guys kept fighting back – no quitters on this squad. With that said – they need a ton of work especially the defense. The DL is just not that good – Tuitt and Nix a real disappointment – seemed they were easily handled for most of the game and Day was just swallowed up.

Which brings me to Bob Diaco – does he know what the hell he’s doing or is it just the players that are hopelessly confused? He just made Devin Gardiner (QB Michigan) an All American – kid just ran and tossed terrifically the whole game. Diaco just seems to be always behind the curve during the game and at times the “D” players seem lost.

On offense – no imagination on play calling at all and it was just way too predictable. I’m not going to hang this loss on Rees, although he did throw one boneheaded pick at the end of the first half.

His job is to manage the offense and not be solely responsible for winning the game by himself – some imaginative play calling from the coaches to help him out would have been nice – that together with some blocking would have been nice also.

Michigan would rush 4 against ND’s 5 and get a lot of pressure on him. The OL really needs to improve on their run blocking – ND had only 96 yds rushing.

With all of the above Rees was 29 of 51 for 314 yds – 2 games in a row Rees over 300 yds passing. One bright note is the emergence of TE Troy Niklas – kid is a stud.

Running back – Carlisle is the real deal and Atkinson isn’t, but Amir is small. With Purdue next, ND must get Bryant and Folston into the game early. These kids have to play NOW!!! Don’t tell me they can’t pick up a blitzer – look at the arms on Bryant.

I’d start Bryant against Purdue and put Carlisle in for the home run–hell why not play 2 RB’s at the same time and just rotate the 3 of Them – again – get some plays, some imagination please. Of course the OL would have to block – just a little bit.

So next is Purdue. A truly dreadful team that just barely eked out a win over Indiana State 20-14.

Other News:

The Good – USC lost to Washington State 10-7.

The Bad – BYU clobbered Texas and racked up 550 in rushing yardage – BYU 40 Texas 21 – seems BYU has a running QB.

Notre Dame VS Michigan

Michigan Wolverines vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Tickets

Unless Michigan QB Devin Gardner throws 5 intercepts or fumbles 5 times Notre Dame will lose this game. Last year Denard Robinson coughed it up 5 or 6 times and ND still barely won.

Notre Dame, take away one 45 yard run, simply could not run the ball against Temple and only scored 1 TD against Temple in the 2nd half. Third down production was horrible and all this is just the offensive side of the ball. I think the Michigan defense is maybe just a tad better than Temple.

Now the Notre Dame defense. What defense – 8 starters back from last year and Temple gets 300+ yds. What I saw last week was not only discouraging but downright scary considering the schedule we have.

The DL simply did not play and the ILB’s were awful – this makes no sense at all considering both Fox and Calabrese have been playing regularly for 4 years. We can only hope that Grace emerges big time.

Temple’s QB in his very first start ran all over the place and if even a few of his passes were caught that game would have been closer – take that with the missed FG’s and ND maybe only wins by 7.

I’m still not sold on Bob Diaco and his philosophy on defense – you just can’t let a team dink and dunk it’s way between the 20’s and expect to win the big games. Michigan has the players to take a dink for a TD, plus they have an excellent FG kicker. They also have a massive OL with a top 5 pick in LT Lewan.

Unless ND comes out in uptempo fast offense like the old Kelly teams I just can’t see them even in this game. I originally thought Michigan by 3 to 7, but after last week they win by at least 14.

Michigan Week, Temple After Thoughts

I’m not privy to what the ND coaches are thinking during the course of a game, but I just do not understand what the 1st string OL was doing in the game in the final 10 minutes. Surely Elmer and Hanratty could have been put in for Z. Martin and C. Watt at LT and LG.

Why risk your best linemen in meaningless mop up time. Surely, at some time this season they will play so why not play them in the Temple game?

Temple After Thoughts:

  • After re-watching this game I do not feel good about the defense especially the front 7.
  • On a few plays when watching the line play Temple pushed the DL 2-3 yds backwards bunched them up thereby giving the ILB’s no gap to hit.
  • I think the DL is out of shape or taking plays off.
  • Moreover, this team at least in the 1st game sorely misses the leadership of Teo, Kap Lewis and Zeke Motta.
  • We can’t rely on this defense to save games for us – so I say junk the bend/no break defense theory.
  • Play aggressive football not wait around ball and hope to get lucky.
  • Kelly opined Sheldon Day a star – didn’t even look like he was even in the game – buried by Temple linemen.

Now Michigan:

  • Brady Hoke has done an excellent job recruiting, especially on the OL – he snagged a few that ND really wanted and they are big dudes.
  • Michigan LT Taylor Lewan is an All-American and maybe the best LT in the country – so we should see quickly how good Tuitt is going against him.
  • Their RT is no slouch either, so we’ll see how Day does there.
  • Michigan starting Center Jack Miller is new – so Nix – no excuses.
  • Thinking about Devin Gardiner – can run but also a decent passer.
  • I would use Jaylon Smith as a spy and give, in this game, one assignment – go get the QB every play.

Here’s Kelly’s Tuesday presser from WatchND.tv:

Notre Dame Dumps Michigan From Schedule

Notre Dame informed Michigan that it would not renew schedule to play them 2015-2017 making the 2014 game to be the last scheduled for what I believe will be a long time–good riddance. Michigan has the most vicious fucking fans in all football and a ND fan that goes to Ann Arbor for a game is taking his life in his hands–so farewell you fuckoffs.

There is a lot of animosity that goes back a long, long time between these schools, consider the following:

  1. Michigan conspires to keep ND out of the Western Conference( now the Big 10,12,26 etc) and that was something like 1901.
  2. ND beats Michigan for the 1st time in 1909
  3. Fielding Yost cancels the 1910 game 24 hours before the game–they would not play for another 32 years.
  4. Rockne calls Fielding Yost an anti-Catholic hillbilly and a crook to boot.
  5. 1926 Yost asks all teams to boycott ND because of Rockne’s famous ND Shift
  6. 1926 ND had won the last 10 games against Big 10 teams

Meanwhile, while Michigan causing mischief ND just rolled along and in 1913 ND schedules Army to fill in for Michigan and as everyone knows that game became one of the most famous games in ND history. It also propelled ND into a National power with a nationwide fan base. ND was National Champs in 1924, 1929 and 1930.

  • ND and Michigan next played in 1942 Michigan won 32-20.
  • 1943 then #1 and #2 Notre Dame beat Michigan 35-12 and won the National Championship.

Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy contacted both Michigan and Ohio State to schedule games. Both declined but that wasn’t enough for they conspired to have Leahy censored by the Coaches Association for faking injuries –to no avail. Yet they besmirched Leahy’s name so much that when polls of outstanding college football coaches, Leahy, despite winning 5 National Championships is not found in the top 10. Leahy was simply drooling to play both of these teams and he had the firepower to really run it up on them.

Woody, Bo and Lloyd wanted nothing to do with ND either and argued strenuously with their AD’s not to schedule ND.

So goodbye you classless chumps. Now that we have an open game lets get some first class schools like Nebraska and Texas in the mix.

When an opponent turns the ball over 6 times, good teams usually put up points in the 40 to 50 point range for wins. Not this time, Notre Dame eked out only a 7 point win. Notre Dame has a serious identity problem on what type of offense to run. In the end it just looks like a mish mash of confusion and ultra conservative play calling and misuse of some of your best players, especially Eifert and Wood.

Eifert is an All American tight end as a receiver–not a blocker. So they are doubling him–leaves someone else open and he came through with a clutch catch to cement this win. It was his first catch in 2 games. Kelly lectures the media that tight ends by definition are really blockers–see some of the disconnect here.

Riddick was terrific and he is my MVP on offense followed by the maligned Tommy Rees who came into the game after Golson had a meltdown mid way in the 2nd quarter. Yet Kelly says Golson is still the starter.

Now Golson may improve, he has a strong arm but looks to me that he is more of a thrower than passer with no touch. He throws way too much into coverage– example to the end zone to Niklas who was covered by 3 Michigan defenders. Now we all know Rees’s limitations and he is not the future but as a 3 year player it feels a lot safer with him in the game and I think his teammates feel the same way.

So we have big problems going ahead especially with an offensive line that has been playing awful except in certain spurts–I give the OL a D grade for this game. Somebody better be working aggressively with Kiel. If he really is a 5 star passer you just have to get him into games somehow this year. He is not going to sit on the bench for the next 3 years.

Finally, finishing with the offense I give a game ball to Michigan coach Brady Hoke who called a time out for a measurement at the end of the game when the refs had it as 4th and 1–backfired showed first down and ND took a kneel to end the game.

This was actually a horrible game for both offenses and badly coached by each coach.

Defense–give them an A with everybody stepping up including all those kids running around like a bunch of frisky squirrels. The DL played great as usual. What more can you say about Manti–that was just a great performance and should seal up the Butkus Award. To name a few other star players on D–Zeke Motta and Danny Spond.

The problem here is we just cannot expect the defense to stop everyone and spend that much time on the field. Kelly has 2 weeks to get this offense tuned up–they have to score points and lots of them with our remaining schedule. I sure hope Kelly has been saving plays because what he’s doing now just won’t work against the rest of this schedule.

I’ll take this win and happy to be 4-0 until I read this article by Greg Couch of Fox Sports–kind of deflating:

4-0 start not as impressive as it seems

Checking in with Charlie Weis his Kansas team lost to Northern Illinois 30-23. Crist 10 0f 26 no TD’s and no picks but 4 sacks. Kansas is now 1-3.

Notre Dame VS. Michigan | Predictions

Writing this post I decided to give Robinson his plays–he makes them all year. He’s a poor passer but looks like Tom Brady when playing Notre Dame plus he’s lucky as hell. So, how does Notre Dame win this NIGHT game–that’s a big part of ND’s problem, they just don’t show up on offense most of the time
at night.

The whole key to this game, in my opinion, will be the play of ND’s offensive line and we should find out how that will go in ND’s first two possessions. If the line plays crazy, all out, this game will be over by half time. The two weak spots RG and RT are a big concern–expect Michigan to put their best DT and DE against them.

Tate Nicols apparently has been cleared to play and I would get him into this game early. You’re talking about a monster at 6’8″ 320 lbs–put him at RT and if you still need help there line up tight end Troy Niklas 6’7″ 260 right next to him. Niklas at his size should also be Golson’s safety valve–how can you miss a guy that big.

The running game will be key to victory for I am not at all sure of Golson’s passing yet. He still stares down receivers and throws into double coverage–see TD throw to Goodman vs. MSU. He had a wide open Roby Toma for a touchdown on that play. He hasn’t shown me that he has the touch on long passes yet. Michigan’s defensive coordinator Greg Mattison will be blitz crazy in this game so ND’s OL must do the job.

I really like Roby Toma but Kelly has to get Davonte Neal into the game, he is an electric player with a lot of speed. He better be careful on punt returns, for he’s already dropped 2.

Finally, Kelly has to take the training wheels off and let these guys play. Fast paced offense, no huddle will offset Mattison’s stunts and changes before the snap. Just play fast–look at what Rich Rod is doing at Arizona he’s in his first year and those guys can go fast paced. No reason Kelly in his 3rd can’t play up tempo–3 years is enough time to install his offense.

On defense–just follow the Alabama blue print. I, personally would just have one plan–kill the QB. The defensive line has to once again play lights out–rush rush and disrupt and hit Denard hard on every play and just hope he doesn’t get loose and is one on one vs. Zeke Motta. If Diaco plays a safe contain game we lose. Denard can’t pass on anyone except ND and he will be looking to win the Heisman Saturday Night.

Prediction–if ND plays as above with no turn overs:

Michigan Coach Bo Shembechler ” I’ll never lose to a high school coach”

Portable lights brought in for Notre Dame’s very first night game. Some great clips from youtube. Blair Kiel the Notre Dame quarterback. There was some great blocking by the ND offensive line and some nice running from the backs.

You will also see one of the most unbelievable plays in football history. Enjoy as you await Saturday night.

How the hell does a team go 80 yds in 30 seconds with a mediocre passer-(-we are not talking Joe Montana to Jerry Rice) by just lobbing the ball up and short? Interceps just for the taking.

This is an experienced defensive team and Gray, Blanton & H. Smith have multi year experience–Gray’s play was shocking.

Does ND have a men’s Rugby team? If so get some guy from there–must be someone who can punt more than 25 yds. Christ, massive DT Kevin Hardy used to punt and he could barely get his leg off the ground.

This defense was to be the backbone of the team but they just imploded in this game–where is all this 4th quarter energy we hear about.

So we are 0-2 against teams that are not all that talented and we have a slew of good passers coming up–looking grim.

Rees will be ok with more experience.

Nothing else to say except kudos to Hoke for going for the win vs. the tying field goal; with 2 secs to go.

Really do not like night games, especially in that stadium. On paper ND should win this game–superior offense vs questionable Michigan defense–but these are basically the same teams from last year.

Did not like at all, when it really mattered, USF’s late long march down the field that put game away.

Believe Rees is a marked man and will see more blitzes than he ever dreamed of and gets flattened after throwing 2 picks.

Special teams for ND could once again lose this game.

In order for ND to win this game, they have to be flawless with both Floyd and Wood having monstrous games and the ND defense has to keep Denard Robinson to 200 total yards.

This is a very good Michigan OL and Robinson can throw as well as run–so look out.

ND falls in 4th quarter just like last year.

Pick: Michigan 31 ND 24
