Brian Kelly, Chuck Martin and Broyles Award winner Bob Diaco (did I mention Broyles Award) better get their head phones checked for tampering – it’s either that or opposing coaches are living inside their heads. Everything is just so predictable on both sides of the ball and to consistently run the ball against 8 in the box is madness – no matter how many 5 star RB’s on the roster.

Sooner or later and I predict sooner, some team is going to blast ND right out of the stadium. Another poster said Tuitt belongs on a milk carton – I like that, so true. Is he still injured or just still out of shape?

Well, enough compliments – a win is a win and we can all thank Tommy Rees who again threw for 300 yards. Memo to receivers – when the ball hits your hands, the whole idea is to catch it. Where the hell would we be without Tommy? Try 0-3.

WR D. Daniels had a great game and TJ Jones was clutch. Cam McDaniel, despite limitations is a tough kid and hard runner. Frosh RB’s had no room to run at all – don’t be surprised if Bryant and Folston hop a jet to Florida if things do not improve in the running game – and the snow arrives.

Lackluster effort for the most part. ND simply cannot play Night Games, in prime time and on national TV – scaring the hell out of recruits. The good news is the Michigan State game is a day game at ND – the bad news is that they found a QB, 4 TD passes against Youngstown State and MSU had 547 yards total offense. Time for Bob Broyles to spring into action – move a few guys around, just for the hell of it.

Items of further interest ;

Temple( 0-3) lost to Fordham!!! 30-29, we only scored 28 against Temple. I didn’t even know that Fordham had a football team.

Next opponents in a row – Mich. State, Oklahoma, Arizona State and USC – last 2 are night games and once you get past them we finish the season with BYU and Stanford. That’s 6 potential losses unless we have drastic improvement in all aspects of this football program.

Don’t mean to be a downer but I see no improvement in this team from game 1 to 3.

Notre Dame Vs. Purdue

This game, every year is THE most important game for Purdue. Purdue, traditionally, has always played ND tough and last year it took a last minute FG to beat a rather poor Boiler team.

I expect that Notre Dame, as they usually do, will play down to the competition level. When you look at the athletic superiority of ND they should easily put up 40 pts and just coast with the subs getting plenty of playing time – I doubt it will work out that way.

What I would like to see in this game for ND:

  • Jarrett Grace – time to see if this kid can play Manti’s position–he’s been waiting 2 years and Dan Fox belongs backing up Calabrese.
  • Bryant & Folston – time to see what they can do–freshman for other teams playing and running all over the place. Not clean up but touches in every quarter. I suspect that both of them know they are the best RB’s on this team
  • TJ Jones – I would not play him in this game.
  • Amir Carlisle – want him in space–slot receiver –quick hits to him.
  • OL – back ups need quality time, especially Elmer, Hanratty and Hegarty.
  • Hendrix – inside the 15 let him be Tebow. If he still can’t cut it then it’s Zaire time.
  • Defense – do something in this game.

I hope I’m wrong but I expect a Temple like game.

I’ve added Kelly presser from Sept 12 provided by watchnd.tv – Kelly said – well this week we decided to get the coaching staff more involved and we made them rerun plays until they got them right – shades of Vince Lombardi.

An unexpectedly tough Purdue team gave Notre Dame a far closer game than anyone expected, especially me. Game won in the closing minutes by Tommy Rees, who calmly led his team down to the 6 yard line and Kyle Brindza kicked the winning field goal. Game ball to Tommy.

2ND game ball goes to the Purdue coach Danny Hope for alternating QB’s when Marve was the far superior QB and already had an excellent first game passing for 300 yds.–thanks coach.

Golson, actually had a pretty good day 21 for 31 289 yards and one TD while the running game was entirely shut down 52 yards rushing on 36 carries. Purdue stacked the box and their interior linemen completely abused the ND offensive line especially Watt Cave and Golic.

Notre Dame had a slew of injuries, which we hope won’t keep them from playing against MSU.

Conclusions:

  • Golson can only get better with more playing time–at times he was somewhat rattled.
  • Kelly needs to get the plays in on time–thought this was corrected–guess not. He did make the right call going to Rees for the closing drive whether or not Golson hurt. Just too much pressure for his experience level.
  • Student fans–mindless idiots among them booed Rees–ND students should have more class. Do they really think Rees wanted to go in????? and flop, a lot put on his shoulders and he came through. If he screwed up can’t imagine fan reaction. Good job Tommy. Incidentally, he’s now over 4000 yards passing and closing on Montana.

Finally. Weis loses heart-breaker vs. Rice 25-24 on a 45 yard field goal in last seconds. Crist 33 of 64 313 yds. 2 TD’s BUT 3 Ints.

In all reality, this game should just be a tuneup for next weeks defining game against Michigan State for this Notre Dame team. We thumped them pretty badly last year(38-10) and there is no reason that we don’t just have a replay.

No injuries reported so this should be just reload and blow these guys out again. The Irish are helped by a mediocre team coached by the hapless Head Coach Danny Hope. He sports the mustache but is no Joe Tiller. Tiller ran a great offense and made average players look damn good and somehow or other always had a great QB. But that was then and this is now.

  • Notre Dame will look to run all over the Boilers, toss in a few passes while giving nothing away to MSU.
  • Look for Golson to do a little more passing–just to get used to it as a prep for next week. The ND defense front 7 should have a field day–it’s the secondary that is the only concern, although a big one.
  • They can keep Purdue in the game.

So flipping to Purdue, what should they do. Coach Hope, after winning his opening game, against Eastern Kentucky with senior QB Robert Marve going 30 of 38 295 yards and 3 TD’s will start the recently suspended senior QB Caleb TerBush. I think I would ride with the guy with one pretty good game under his belt, but then again I’m not Danny Hope.

Regardless, Purdue’s only chance is to pass pass and then pass some more and attack the weak link in the ND defense. Purdue on defense must try to make Golson pass and get ND in third and long by blitzing often–make Golson win this game with his arm.

Purdue has 2 quality defensive tackles in Kawann Short 6’3″ 315 and Bruce Gaston 6’2″ 303. Look for Short to line up against Golic while at the same time putting pressure on RT Lombard to collapse the right side of ND’s offensive line and get to Golson. That’s what I would do–will it work? Worth a try.

I see Notre Dame just wearing down Purdue on both sides of the ball and cruising to an easy win.

Great to get this game out of the way with a real beat down. How big of a dickhead do you think Long Snapper feels–gets penalty and breaks his hand.

Want you to check out und.com irish connection–terrific video:

Next up Air Force–4days to the half way mark, then a bye week before USC.

Finally a relaxing game for ND fans as Purdue was stomped big time to the tune of 551 yds by the ND offense.

Great running game by Wood (191 yds) including a 55 yard burst for a TD. Jonas Gray finally got more touches which produced 94 rushing yds.

Tommy Rees–no turnovers hit for 3 TD passes and 250 yds passing. Floyd, TJ Jones and Eifert all scored.

Defense held Purdue to 276 total yds.

Special Teams need a lot of work–2 missed field goals and a blocked one could really cost going ahead,.

Somehow the snapper and holder have to get it together. Punt return–non existent.

Tuitt missed the bus for missing a class and that had a ripple effect–Lynch had to play more due to injury to Ethan Johnson(ankle) and what I didn’t know– ND wanted to red shirt Kona Schwenke this year. So a bad decision by Tuitt cost a teammate a year of eligibility.

Crist did mop up duty which surprised me. Kelly apparently asked him if he wanted to go in and he said yes. Real ND man–real high character.

Other than the above–very satisfying win.

I did have the opportunity of watching Air Force vs Navy which made me anxious–both excellent option teams–play fast and intense for 4 quarters yet they don’t seem to tire out at all. ND will have to put up big big numbers to make them one dimensional—red flag games.

USC also seems much improved–damn it!

8 P.M. GAME ON ESPN

So let’s take a look:

Purdue just finished an arduous 3 game schedule and just recuperated with a bye week prior to playing ND.

In game 1- they edged Middle Tennessee 27-24.
In game 2–they lost to Rice 24-22.
In game 3–they trounced S.E. Missouri State 59-0.

Outside of Rice are the other 2 really colleges?

Purdue has been averaging about 250 yds rushing and their main man is Ralph Bolden–they also have a 255lb fullback. with a good sized offensive line–so again ND’s main job will be to stop the run.

They utilize 2 Qb’s-Caleb TerBush and the Mitch Mustain clone QB Robert Marve–Marve, once a highly recruited talent who originally went to Fla or Miami–really don’t remember.

Big defensive line with a couple 300 lb defensive tackles–one of which Bruce Gaston(Chicago) highly recruited by ND.

I expect that Purdue will try to duplicate the Pitt defense and while they don’t have a very good secondary, neither did Pitt.

So it all comes down to whether or not ND comes to play or just tries to get by easiest way they can with as little effort as possible.

If ND plays fired up ball, this game is over by half time–could easily put up 30 in first half and then coast to a 44-14 win.

Game will mark T. Rees 9th start–hopefully he finally plays a error free game. Really is time for him to improve dramatically.

ND desperately needs a blow out game, not only to rest the starters but to get the reserves some real time game experience.

Roby Toma has best game of his career.

Prediction:

ND 44 PURDUE 14
