ND VS USC

Well, this is it. Has ND really progressed or was Utah off that day or overrated–forget Navy.

Mustain who has been in college for what seems 10 yrs will probably start. He is not that bad a QB and certainly has more experience than Rees.

Haven’t seen USC this year but they are 7-4 and the only blowouts were vs, Oregon State and Oregon–they did score 32 pts against Oregon. They lost to Stanford by 2pts. We did very poorly ag. Stanford.

USC played a tougher schedule than ND including wins ag. Cal, Arizona and Arizona State.

Keys to a ND victory:

  1. stop the run
  2. harass the QB continuously
  3. ND must be able to run the ball or it’s all over.

Think only way ND wins is turnovers. This is going to be a very tough game and whoever plays 4 quarters will win. Rees will have to be damn near perfect for ND to win and, of course, the OL must play their best game of the year. The OL is the key to this game–if they relapse it’s over early.

John Goodman–lot has been written about his productivity on punts, Every game I saw he had a guy right in front of him before he even caught the ball. If they can set up the punt return properly I would let Floyd do the returns.

Robert Blanton ignited the entire ND team with a punt block for a touchdown. Prior to that it looked on offense as same old story. The defense played hard the entire game.

After the punt block ND seemed an entirely different team in all aspects of the game.

Brian Smith played his best game as did Kamara with 2 TD’s. Floyd was just Floyd. Wood and Jonas Gray ran well and the OL finally started hitting hard and opening holes. Pleased to see LG Chris Watt got significant playing time–looked good as he preps for 2011.

2 freshman Kona Schwenke and Prince Shembo played very well when in.

Rees was workmanlike–did well for his first start.

Coaching–best so far from entire staff. Team looked and played like a semi-decent team. Hats off to Kelly. Finally had a chance to enjoy a game. Just hope they bring same intensity for remaining 2 games.

Next up Army and the option. Hope the defense just attacks rather than trying to re-act.

Good win–trust Kelly keeps pressure on during this weeks practices.

UTAH WEEK

ND has had 2 weeks to prepare for this game so there are no excuses.

Still it is difficult to determine how good or bad this team is with all the injuries. But the record is the record-so we go from there.

As previously posted–this group of ND players should be hitting their stride. All of the excellent recruiting by Weis over his last 4 years should now be showing up on the field–it isn’t. How do you get them to play–no one on 2 coaching staffs seems to know. Better in Nov. than Sept.–No.

Okay a good Utah team gets blown out by TCU, so the feeling here is, they will come into ND all pumped up. They will not fall flat–no one else has, and, again this is a good well coached team.

Thus far, of the 5 losses, the winning team put up at least 28 points including Tulsa and Utah is a far better team. With that in mind this observer believes Utah hits 40 or over this Saturday.

Final Score

Utah 42 ND 24
