This and That

Just a hodge pot of thoughts on the program:

Crist–heading for Wisconsin? If so hope that works out for him. Some reports leaking out of ND that teammates loved him but actually preferred Rees on the field–sorta like baseball pitcher that just falls apart when he’s homered(unconfirmed). Who knows.

Charlie Molnar – current OC leaving to take HC job at UMASS– don’t even know what he did at ND–but that job just looks to be a road to failure–maybe given a push by Kelly?

Manti Teo–Academic All American team–Gov. of Hawaii someday.

Recruits– bunch set up for the banquet–including Kiel–love to have him but he ran a Pro-set in HS–sorta like Dayne. Wants to play early–think he goes to Vandy.

Recruits–in general–we are really weak in OL– depth chart now shows 2 red shirt freshman as 2nd team–how the hell did that happen. Back again to playing guys on OL before their time–most BCS schools start 4th & 5th yr guys.

Recruits in general–sure you try for top guys but I really want kids that really want ND–sorta like that Kuechle(BC) kid–Butkus award winner and Mike Martin–just 2-3 yr All American at Michigan at Nose Tackle.

I know–Lynch & Tuitt–great but get some over achievers–they have worked for years at ND. Somehow Stanford has figured this out.

Braxton Cave–what the hell do we do if he does not come back for 5th year?

  1. Just read on ISD that Kiel shortened his visit to ND (there today, leaving tomorrow) so that he can visit USC this weekend. Seems to be looking around a whole lot so it makes me skeptical whether he’s sold on ND.

    1. He knows he doesn’t fit this offense(Crist)–so let’s pass on him, really no need at QB this year–but you’ve got to get a body at QB–don’t have any idea–but some guy must want ND that can throw a 30 yd pass–check out all stars in Catholic Leagues–this yr.

I just don’t understand this offense–QB has 7 reads but has to go supposedly the warp speed BK offense–how the hell were the Cinn. QB’s able to run this when we have a pre-med guy that has what 3 plays????

  2. Your comment about smarts and QB success got me thinking. Maybe the fact that he’s a pre-med guy is the very problem! How many guys growing up that were super smart science guys and also awesome at sports? It’s rare because the type of smarts doesn’t always translate over. And conversely, how many guys on LSU’s team have even opened a book this year. So just because Hendrix is a super smart guy doesn’t mean he’ll be smart on the football field. In science he can study all he wants and take his time. In sports, he has to make split section evaluations and decisions. Not to mention, maybe he spends too much time studying and not enough on football.
However, take a guy (Everett Golson) who plays something like SIX musical instruments and composes music. I think this sort of intelligence (never mind the fact he is book smart too) translates better to the football field. Your instincts take over and you are in a state of flow. Instead of thinking too much, you evaluate the field, react and make some music.
I am excited about the raw talent of Hendrix but my money’s on Golson. I think he would’ve surpassed Hendrix this year if Crist remained #1. But Kelly decided to save a year of eligibility. Golson will bulk up some in the offseason, watch a ton of film, and be ready come spring. Kelly just needs to let him play and have his instincts take over (without yelling at him into a shell). And I’d rather have another Keving McDougal and compete for the title than a heralded pro-style QB Mirer, Powlus, or Clausen and go 8-4.

    1. Shane–you’re probably right–all the smart guys I went to school with were on the bowling team. Kiel visiting USC makes me ill.

Have to admit-don’t know much about Golson except he looks short–don’t know if he’s as tall as Drew Brees–if he is then no problem.

On QB’s I’ve come to the conclusion that accuracy is more important than cannon arm etc–still have to be able to throw long though. Montana did not have strong arm, but threw soft easy to catch balls–sorta like Rees but far more accurate and could go deep. On the other hand Crist could take your head off.

    2. Interesting comments. I said it before and I will say it again. Golson is the future of the program. Hendrix has had some good moments but I’m not completely sold on him yet. Kiel visiting USC does not surprise me at . Tee Shepard and Deontay Greenbury just went out there too. I live in LA and USC is a complete dump but Kiffin might find a way to sweeten it for them. If ND does not beat the crap out FSU at Champs then we will have problems. It’s going to be Golson starting next year. No doubt. I liked Kevin McDougal too but I think Rick Mirer was clutch. Good comments.

  3. Both Crist and Kiel ran spread offenses in HS. Look up their highlights on Youtube – almost exclusively spread. Kiel rushed for 470 yards and 11 TDs this season.

Crist was pretty mobile coming out of HS, but the knee injuries didn’t help. Keil is also pretty athletic. Physically, he fits just fine in BK’s offense.

    1. LA–now those USC visits bother me a lot. If guys continue to visit elsewhere–do we really have a commit–don’t think so.

Answers–looks like I’m completely misinformed, really thought both ran more Pro style. Then for Crist must all be mental and for Kiel–problem must be Golson. Thanks for clarification.

    2. God I hope so. I hope we get Kiel and I really hope we get someone he can throw it to because with the guys we have left over, aside from Eifert and Toma, I’m not feeling confident.
